About
When I was a kid, I always took pictures with my Canonet. My mother had an 8mm film camera and filmed all our family events,
and like her, I wanted to capture things and people on film. Every week she drove me to the local Fotomat drop-off kiosk to get
my rolls developed, and after a few days, I ripped through the packages and pinned the latest pictures on my bedroom's cork wall.
One day while driving to the Fotomat, she exclaimed to me, "You know you can't make any money from photography." I wondered,
Money? Who's thinking about money? But I quickly realized what she meant, since she was always concerned about money: she
didn't want photography to become my career. Suddenly I felt like a sinkhole opened up and swallowed me. And not too soon after,
I stopped taking pictures.
Jump fifteen years later. After college, after being laid off from a dreary editorial job, depressed, one day I picked up the Canonet
and started to shoot periodically again. Sooner than later, I renewed my love for photography, got an MFA, and the rest is...well, you know.
What I believe is this: the landscape across the Earth is now basically a system of man-made spaces. It is no longer a totally ‘natural’
space because we have controlled, organized, and contaminated a lot of it. So, in my mind the landscape (including what lies in it)
has become a significant and profound bearer of our cultural, social and technological histories. Using different supports, my artistic
and photographic work examines how we develop our space, what we make and leave in our space, how we impose and create our
own special histories and particular rhythms – positive or negative – throughout the space, and what that all means graphically
or symbolically through the vision of my own eye.
